About the University of Southern Mississippi
Leading the Wave of the Blue Economy
For decades, the University of Southern Mississippi has been strategically investing in coast-wide maritime infrastructure that positions Coastal Mississippi to advance technology in an initial set of six blue tech innovation sectors. These sectors are un-crewed maritime systems, aquaculture, marine-friendly plastics, ocean & coastal data analytics, smart ports, and sea-space systems.
Today, the Gulf Blue Initiative is charting the path forward by leading the region to the next chapter of growth focused on discoveries, advanced innovations, and new practices for blue economy commerce. Meet the team below.
The Gulf & Ship Island Building
The City of Gulfport was incorporated in 1898, largely through the efforts of Captain Joseph T. Jones, a self-made oil tycoon from Pennsylvania. Captain Jones purchased the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad to ship Yellow Pine across the country and built the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad building in 1902. Recognizing the need for more efficient distribution, he dredged the shipping channel that is still
in use today by the Port of Gulfport.
The Gulf & Ship Island RR Building was restored in 1986. Today the GSI Building serves as the hub of the Gulf Blue Initiative and truly represents
the blue economy of both yesterday, today and tomorrow.
